Barry Ferguson has said on PLZ Soccer that he is surprised that Celtic have released Jonny Hayes.
The former Rangers star believes that the Hoops should have retained the services of the Republic of Ireland international winger.
While stating that clubs need players such as Hayes who can operate in a number of positions and do a good job for the team, Ferguson has admitted his surprise at Celtic manager Neil Lennon’s decision to let the 32-year-old go.
Former Celtic defender Derek Whyte has also praised Hayes for his spell at Celtic Park.
Ferguson said about Hayes on PLZ Soccer: “I always think that you need players like that in the team.
“Jonny Hayes was never going to be a certain starter for Celtic, but I tell you what, when the boy came in, he played well, whether it was at left-back, at wing-back or out on the left side and even on the right side I have seen him play a couple of times.
“He always did a good job, and I believe that you always need players, so I was surprised that Lenny let him go.”
Whyte told The Scottish Sun about Hayes: “I think he did well during his three years at the club. He was a good acquisition and played in a number of positions.
“I think he’s played his part. Whenever he’s played domestically and in Europe, I think he’s done a good job.”
