The former Rangers captain thinks Steven Gerrard’s side could find it difficult to break down deep defences at home.
Steven Gerrard’s team created a multitude of chances last Thursday night against Progres Niederkorn and while they won the match 2-0, could have racked up a scoreline that put the tie beyond all doubt before the second leg.
How the Luxumbourg outfit shaped up will be typical of most Scottish Premiership opposition teams in Govan this term and Ferguson thinks that could pose a problem.
Writing in The Daily Record, the former Ibrox captain said: “Fans want you to go out and win games easily but it’s tough when teams sit back. They might not be the best but they are well organised.
“The problem Rangers are going to have is the vast majority of teams who come to Ibrox are going approach the game in the same was Progres did the other night.
“Rangers need to find ways of getting through teams who sit deep and try to frustrate and in time they will.”
Although relaxed that his old team will eventually find a way to consistently pick up the wins they need, in time, Ferguson would go on to wish for a specific signing to help them out creatively.
It’s a signing now almost certainly not going to happen, with the situation becoming clearer since the 41-year-old’s column was published.
The former captain wrote at length about the importance of re-signing Ryan Kent to help break teams down, but Jurgen Klopp ruled out a loan move (The Daily Record) on Sunday.
Kent was a key weapon for the Gers last term, as evidenced by Gerrard’s recent comments on the player, and not having him available makes the task Ferguson lays out that much harder.
Rangers also don’t have the luxury of having the time Ferguson suggests, with the league campaign kicking off next week and points counting right from the off.
It’s still far too early in the season to properly judge this season’s Rangers side but turning tricky draws against defensive sides into wins is one of the big barriers between the Ibrox side and silverware.
Gerrard must find the right attacking blend to get the job done.
