Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in bringing Allan McGregor back to Ibrox this summer.

Barry Ferguson has told STV that bringing Allan McGregor back to Ibrox at the end of the season would be a massive piece of business for Rangers as the goalkeeper seemingly edges closer to a return to the Gers.

The Daily Record reported on Wednesday that Rangers are in advanced talks to bring the 36-year-old back to the Scottish Premiership on a free transfer six years after he departed the Light Blues for Besiktas.

McGregor made 278 appearances for the Gers in all competitions during his first spell with the club, winning a number of honours along the way. And Ferguson feels that the Hull City stalwart would be a brilliant acquisition, and seemed to hint that he would consider McGregor to be the first-choice ahead of Wes Foderingham.

“I think it would be a great signing. I played with Allan for a number of years, fantastic goalkeeper, a lot of ability, but the biggest thing for me is that he’s a massive character,” he told STV.

“He puts demands on players, he knows what it’s like to play at Rangers, he knows the pressures that the fans put you under, so for me, I think it’s a no-brainer. I think Rangers have got a very good goalkeeper at this moment in time, but to get Allan McGregor would be a massive signing for Rangers.”

Foderingham has been a decent performer for the Gers during his time with the club. On his day, he has the potential to be a colossus for the side, but it certainly appears that McGregor becoming the number one would be a popular decision amongst the fans.

And while he may now be reaching the twilight of his career, there seems no reason why the veteran cannot hold down the number one role for a couple of years at least – the Record’s report suggests that a two-year deal is being discussed – and vindicate the club’s faith to push him ahead of Foderingham in the pecking order, if that is what they decide to do.

And with the deal set to be a free transfer if all goes through, it is difficult to find a reason to disagree with Ferguson’s assessment of the speculation.
