Barry Ferguson suggests how many signings Rangers need in January

Glasgow Rangers enjoyed an incredibly busy summer, but Barry Ferguson thinks Steven Gerrard needs more signings at Ibrox.

Barry Ferguson has told PLZ Soccer that he thinks that Rangers need to make two or three signings in January, but added that he expected the club to back Steven Gerrard during the transfer window.

Despite a handful of underwhelming results recently, Gerrard has made a very good start to life at Ibrox with the Gers reaching the semi-final of the League Cup, going along nicely in the Scottish Premiership and performing very well in the Europa League.

The situation looks slightly more disappointing now after their Hampden Park defeat at the weekend and their draw with Kilmarnock on Wednesday night that meant that the Light Blues missed the chance to close the gap at the top of the Premiership.

And Ferguson believes that Gerrard still needs to sign a handful of players during the upcoming window, but expects the Rangers hierarchy to give him the funds he needs.

“I think there is funds there for him in January. I do think Rangers are still short of two or three players,” he told PLZ Soccer. “He’s made some good signings but when you bring in 14 or 15 players not every single one of them is going to hit the ground running.

“There’s maybe 50 or 60 per cent of them who have done really well but the other ones have fell away a wee bit. He’s laid down the gauntlet and said, ‘If you’re not going to produce, you’re not going to be here so I will just go out and get someone else’. I do think the Rangers board will back him.”

It does appear that Rangers’ squad is being stretched as they look to battle on all fronts. They have the numbers to cope with the schedule, but there are probably too many members of the squad who have been disappointing in recent weeks.

And if Rangers can enjoy a different sort of window this time around – by focusing on a handful of marquee additions rather than on largely improving the depth in the squad – then perhaps the Gers can rediscover the promise that they were showing during the opening months of the season.
