Neil Lennon is on the verge of securing a historic treble-treble for Celtic.
Former Scottish Premiership player Barry Ferguson has admitted that he is ‘shocked’ by the age of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.
Whilst selecting his Young Player of the Year in Scotland’s top-flight, Ferguson didn’t include Ajer because he thought he was ‘a lot older’.
But when he found out his real age, Ferguson admitted to PLZ Soccer that he was ‘disappointed’ with himself because he thought he knew his football.
“I will say, I’m missing Ajer there [on my shortlist for Young Player of the Year],” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer. “That’s my fault. I’m disappointed with myself for the simple fact is I actually thought Ajer was a lot older, so Ajer would have been on [my shortlist].
“I’m shocked that he’s 20 [turned 21 six days ago]. I know my football, that’s why I was surprised [by his age]. If he keeps playing the way he’s playing, Celtic are going to get a lot of money for him.”
Ajer has been a rock at the heart of Celtic’s defence this season and a big reason behind why they are winning eight in a row.
Over the course of the season, he has played 23 Premiership matches for his side, missing some games because of injury or suspension. But, as a result, he has helped his treble-treble chasing team secure 17 clean sheets during that time [transfermarkt].
In years gone by, Celtic have always been able to produce great defensive-minded players who have gone on to produce the goods down the line.
Current Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama and Liverpool powerhouse Virgil van Dijk are prime examples of that.
