Rangers and Celtic players dominate the PFA’s Player of the Year award shortlist.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers is red carded during the Ladbrokes Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 31, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Barry Ferguson has claimed that ‘some players’ will be against Alfredo Morelos when voting for the PFA’s Player of the Year as he believes he is better than Celtic duo James Forrest and Callum McGregor.

As reported by BBC Sport, Morelos is on a four-man shortlist for the prestigious prize, with teammate Ryan Kent and Bhoys duo Forrest and McGregor.

Throughout the season, Morelos has had discipline issues and has been sent off on a number of occasions for his off-the-ball actions on the field of play.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer’s official YouTube account (01/04/2019), Ferguson backed Morelos to win the PFA’s Player of the Year award as he shared the two areas he is better in than Kent, McGregor and Forrest.

“Four of them have had really good seasons for me,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer. “I just look at goals, they win you games and obviously, Morelos has scored 29 goals this season. I know he’s had his problems with his sending offs, but out of the three, he’s been the most improved for me. He’s the one that has stepped up and produced goals at important times for Rangers.

On whether Morelos’ behaviour goes against him when players are voting: “I think it will with some players and others will look at the bigger picture and look at what he’s actually done on the park in terms of scoring goals. Listen, he winds people up, he gets in people’s faces. Some players might not like that. That will go against him.

“When I was playing people would ask me, ‘oh, you wouldn’t vote for a Celtic player’. You’ve got to be professional and think who has actually been the best player or who you think has been the most consistent this season. That’s why I’m going with Morelos.”

Morelos’ off-the-ball antics can be criticised all the time, but his ability on the ball is there for all to see. When he has kept his head he has been a constant threat in front of goal.

Throughout the campaign, the powerful forward has played 27 Premiership games for his side, scoring 17 goals and supplying his teammates with eight assists [transfermarkt].

One area that questions will be raised is that he is yet to score against the best team in Scotland – Celtic. He still has the chance to break that duck when the Old Firm meets later on this month.

It remains to be seen if Morelos even starts that encounter. Last time out, he was sent off and in his absence, Jermain Defoe has led the line brilliantly.
