Barry Ferguson rubbishes Rangers link

Glasgow Rangers legend Barry Ferguson was linked with a return to Ibrox this week.

Barry Ferguson has told STV2’s Peter and Roughie show that he isn’t planning on returning to Rangers and working under prospective new manager Derek McInnes.

The Scottish Sun reported this week that the 39-year-old could be part of McInnes’s management team at Ibrox if he got the job.

The former Clyde boss, who spent 10 years at Rangers across two spells, is a hugely popular figure within the Gers’ fanbase and his return alongside McInnes would surely be a double boost for supporters, who have waited well over a month for the club’s board to replace axed Pedro Caixinha.

But Ferguson has said that the speculation was news to him and insists that he hasn’t spoken with his former Ibrox team-mate over the role, but backs him to do a great job if and when he is appointed.

“I woke up on Monday morning and had numerous texts and missed calls and I don’t know where it’s come from,” he told STV2’s Peter and Roughie show.

“I’ve not spoken to Derek, I’ve not spoken to Rangers, so for me it was a lot of nonsense. He’s not got the job yet. I think he’ll be a very good Rangers manager but we’ll just need to wait and see.”

Aberdeen released a statement indicating that they had denied Rangers permission to negotiate with the 46-year-old on Tuesday night, but the fact that McInnes missed training on Wednesday – according to Sky Sports – has intensified the speculation and surely fans of both clubs are desperate for a resolution at this stage.
