Rangers were beaten 1-0 by Aberdeen on Sunday evening.
Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has told PLZ Soccer that he will confront Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson – his nephew – and will give him a ‘clip round the ear’ for scoring against the Gers.
Steven Gerrard’s side took on Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday evening, with a place in the Scottish League Cup final up for grabs – and a match with Celtic.
Rangers were favourites for the game despite being without leading strikers Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty, which left Umar Sadiq to lead the line after two months without an appearance.
Rangers are toothless going forward and were hit with a sucker punch as Lewis Ferguson headed home the winner for Aberdeen, giving the Dons a late 1-0 win.
It was a bitter pill for Rangers to swallow, especially as the goal came from a player let go by the Gers having been in their youth ranks earlier in his career.
Ferguson, 19, started out with Rangers in 2009 before being released in 2013, and after establishing himself at Hamilton Academical, the midfielder has impressed early on at Aberdeen following his summer move.
The teenager is the nephew of Rangers hero Barry Ferguson, and the ex-Scotland midfielder has now offered his view on his former club being dumped out by a member of his own family.
Ferguson suggested that he is ‘not happy’ with Lewis bagging the winner, and he didn’t know how to feel as he wants both Rangers and his nephew to thrive – and added that whilst it’s good for Lewis to get one over on Rangers five years since his release, he will confront the youngster and give him a ‘clip round the ear’ for scoring against Rangers.
“Am I happy? I’ll be honest, no,” said Ferguson. “I didn’t know what to do when I seen him win that header and it go in the back of the net. I wanted Rangers to win but as the game went on I thought to myself I had a sneaky feeling this might happen. It was a great header, he was aggressive and he wanted to win it more than the Rangers players. At the end of the day it’s disappointing for me.”
“Before the game I said I wanted Rangers to win and Lewis to have a good game. He is family and I want him to have a long and successful career. It’s good for Lewis in a way because he rejected from Rangers as a 14-year-old boy. He was told he wasn’t good enough to become a Rangers player and he went to Hamilton. Fair play to to him, he dug in and he worked hard and he’s got a lot to thank Hamilton for because they gave him an opportunity. Since Derek signed him at Aberdeen he’s become a regular and he’s doing the business but when I see him I will give him a clip round the ear,” he added.
