Rangers jumped ahead of rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table prior to the international break.
Barry Ferguson is hoping that newly-appointed Sporting Director Ross Wilson can help Rangers unearth top talents just like Celtic have done in previous years with the likes of Victor Wanyama and Virgil Van Dijk.
On Monday, Rangers confirmed on their official website that Wilson is their new Sporting Director, who arrived from Premier League side Southampton and having had previous experience with the likes of Falkirk, Watford and Huddersfield Town.
The much-experienced Wilson has replaced Mark Allen in the boardroom hot seat, with the latter leaving his role in September for ‘family reasons’, as reported by BBC Sport.
Speaking to PLZ Soccer, Ferguson believes Wilson is the ‘right’ man for the job, as he stated that Rangers just need to look at Celtic in regards to making millions out of very little from the transfer market.
“He looks like he is the right guy for the job,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer. “I had seen that Steven Gerrard had said that they were delighted that they went and got him. Hopefully, he will come up and do a similar job to the one he did at Southampton and Falkirk.
“You just need to look at what Celtic have done in terms of your Wanyama’s and Van Dijk’s. They have brought them over for a few million pounds and sold them off for five, six times that amount of money.
“I think that’s what they have identified Wilson as. One of these guys can go and do the same thing. I am sure he can because he has done that at Southampton as well.”
If Wilson is to have a positive impact on Rangers then it will take time, but will no doubt be rewarding for Steven Gerrard.
Rangers have been pretty busy during the previous two transfer windows, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they opt to do little when the window re-opens in January.
But that all depends on where Rangers are in a few months time because if they are sitting top of the tree in the Premiership, as they are now, then Gerrard might opt against doing that extra piece of business.
