Celtic have had an indifferent start to the new season, but they are still sitting top of the Scottish Premiership.
Barry Ferguson has hit out at Tom Boyd following his comments during Celtic’s League Cup win against Dunfermline over the weekend.
Celtic ambassador Boyd stated during the game that Neil Lennon’ side were playing against ‘not 10 men, not the 11 men, but the 12 men of Dunfermline’, as he was seemingly referring to referee John Beaton as the 12th man, as quoted by BBC Sport.
Boyd was criticising the official for not awarding Celtic a clear penalty during the game, as Neil Lennon’s side needed extra-time to see off the lower league side.
Speaking to PLZ Soccer’s official YouTube account (19/08/2019), former Rangers man Ferguson expressed a strong opinion on Boyd’s comments.
“For me, there’s no need to make a comment like that,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer. “I have seen it myself, for me, it was a penalty. John Beaton has made a genuine mistake and I am sure he would admit that. But just leave it at that.
“There’s no need to bring up stuff – or playing against 10, 11 or 12 men. I don’t think there’s any need for that. I don’t think we need to pander to these sort of people.
“They [referees] are only human beings, they are going to make mistakes. They have got a split-second decision to make. And if you look at it, they are going to make throughout the season quite a number of mistakes. There’s no need to go into if he supports a certain team.”
It has been an indifferent start to the season for Celtic because they are no longer in the Champions League and they were taken to extra-time by Dunfermline.
However, they have won their opening two matches in the Scottish Premiership, as they will turn their attention on qualifying for the Europa League on Thursday.
