Jermain Defoe and Kyle Lafferty failed to score as an Alfredo Morelos-less Rangers were held to a goalless draw with Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup.
Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has pointed out that Kyle Lafferty and Jermain Defoe must step up with star striker Alfredo Morelos set to serve the final two games of his most recent ban, speaking to PLZ Soccer.
The Colombian striker has been in the headlines for right and wrong reasons this season, scoring 23 goals in all competitions but being sent off four times too. His most recent red card came against Aberdeen in last Wednesday’s 4-2 win at Pittodrie.
Worryingly, Rangers looked toothless in attack without their combustible talisman with both Defoe and Lafferty failing to find the net in Saturday’s goalless Scottish Cup draw at Kilmarnock.
One-time Rangers skipper Ferguson has pointed out that Morelos looks like the one player Steven Gerrard cannot do without – but believes Lafferty and Defoe are capable of more.
“I don’t care what anybody says, he’s the main man for Rangers and they need to find a solution if he is suspended,” Ferguson said.
“That’s where Defoe and Kyle Lafferty need to step in and start scoring goals, but he is their main player and he is being badly missed.”
In his second spell at Rangers, Lafferty has scored just one goal in his last 17 games in all competitions with his barren run showing no signs of coming to an end.
Defoe has looked sharp since arriving from Bournemouth, meanwhile, but he is 36 years of age these days with his best years well behind him. In short, Morelos cannot return soon enough.
