Former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has talked up the influence of Ibrox assistant manager Gary McAllister on Steven Gerrard’s current side, writing in his regular Daily Record column.

The Gers have had an excellent start to the season.

Apart from a solitary defeat to Celtic at Ibrox, they’re undefeated in the 14 other matches they’ve played in all competitions.

Serious progress is being shown both domestically and in European action.

A 1-0 result at home to Feynoord last Thursday night has given fans hope they can put together a group stage campaign that sees them qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Ferguson has been left impressed.

Although noting that much of the team’s progress over the last 18 months has been down to Gerrard, he doesn’t want anyone to sleep on the contribution of assistant McAllister.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: “Steven Gerrard is a young manager, he’ll be the first to admit he’s still learning on the job, but he has a wealth of experience sitting next to him in the shape of Gary McAllister.

“Rangers have an abundance of talent in that dugout with coach Michael Beale also a huge contributor. Gary Mac is a huge influence on Gerrard and that’s why he brought him to Glasgow as his assistant.

“Gary has also been a success in Europe, a huge presence at Rangers and someone who has been there and seen it all. Nobody should underestimate the value in having that experience at
the club and for Gerrard to have a shoulder to lean on.”

What can Rangers achieve this season?

The derby loss to Celtic showed that the Gers still have a bit of work to do to challenge the Hoops in the league and cups this season.

However, real optimism will remain that serious silverware can be won. As Gerrard’s side showed last season, on their day they can compete with their city rivals.

The consistency of the Ibrox side home and away in the Scottish Premiership has been impressive outside of that one.

With the experience of winners like McAllister and Gerrard in the dugout, they’re not going to be too far away however the rest of the season pans out.

The Ibrox support are incredibly thirsty for success and will demand nothing less, knowing that a team has been assembled good enough to finally deliver what they want.
