Barry Ferguson has claimed that Rangers still have a ‘stronger squad’ than their Old Firm rivals Celtic, but he expects Neil Lennon’s side to strengthen their team even further in January.

Celtic are currently sitting top of the pile in the Scottish Premiership, with both teams having a pretty busy and successful summer transfer window.

Despite losing Kieran Tierney in the summer, Celtic could potentially use some of that money to boost their squad even further when the winter transfer window re-opens, whilst the Gers have flexed their muscle for Steven Gerrard.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer (30/09/2019), Ferguson expects Celtic to go again in January, but he doesn’t think they have the best squad compared to their rivals.

On whether Rangers can match Celtic if Lennon’s side decides to strengthen in January: “I still think Rangers have a stronger squad,” Ferguson told PLZ Soccer.

“But Celtic are still the team to beat and Lennon has made it clear that even if they are doing well, he’s always looking to strengthen. It’s always a good time to strengthen when you are top of the league and I am sure Lennon will want to use some of that money in January.”

A lot of football has to be played from now until January for either team to get a realistic understanding of what they might or might not do.

Injuries, player form or even potential sales could impact what either side decides, but one thing is for sure, it’s going to be pivotal to the title race.

Until then, Lennon and Gerrard will concentrate on what is set to be a very busy few months – from Premiership action, to domestic cup and European games. It’s going to be a testing time for both managers.
