Glasgow Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield was sent off in the Ibrox side’s latest victory.

Scott Arfield of Rangers looks dejected following the Scottish Premier League match between Motherwell and Rangers at Fir Park on August 26, 2018 in Motherwell, Scotland.

Barry Ferguson has told PLZ Soccer that while he does not believe that Rangers have a discipline problem, Scott Arfield made a crazy decision to make the challenge that led to the midfielder being sent off at the weekend.

Arfield’s challenge arguably took some of the shine off what proved to be an important day for the Gers. The 2-1 win over Hearts sent Steven Gerrard’s men to the top of the Scottish Premiership, but the Canada international’s afternoon ended early.

The summer signing was dismissed after a bizarre sliding tackle on the Hearts goalkeeper as he kept the ball from crossing the goalline. The incident incited a lot of anger from the home team and saw Arfield promptly sent off by Bobby Madden.

Steven Gerrard told the club’s official website after the game that they had no complaints with the decision, and Ferguson has now suggested that he cannot understand what persuaded Arfield to make the challenge.

“If you ask Scott Arfield, who’s an experienced player, he didn’t need to go and do that. But I don’t think they’ve got a discipline problem. But it was crazy what he did, let’s be honest,” he told PLZ Soccer.

It is a real shame for Rangers to lose Arfield while he is suspended. He has arguably been playing some of his best football since his move to Ibrox during the summer, with his performance against Villarreal on Thursday proving to be particularly impressive.

And while Gerrard did not appear to be too annoyed at the 30-year-old after the game, his stance may change if the Gers struggle while he is out of the team.
