Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has compared Steven Gerrard’s current team at Ibrox to the treble-winning side he played in during Dick Advocaat’s reign as boss, writing in his weekly Daily Record column.

Gerrard’s side have made a flying start to the season, winning all but one of their matches so far and picking up some impressive results against teams such as Hibernian and FC Midtjylland.

For Ferguson, the form is reminiscent of the famous Rangers treble-winning team of the 1998/99 season.

As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: “The similarities are glaring and the next month will tell if they are on route to being as successful.

“I’ve watched performances from Rangers these last 10 days that have been typified by tempo and desire, with the ball pinged around the pitch at pace.

“Already comparisons are being drawn with the Rangers side I was fortunate enough to play in when Dick Advocaat first arrived at Ibrox in 1998. I was part of a side that was fitter than anyone out there and we excelled at taking the ball to feet, two touches at most, before finding a team-mate.”

It’s a comparison that might suggest Ferguson is getting a bit carried away, though he does give his opinion with the caveat that Rangers have much to do over the next month to prove whether they can match the trophy success of Advocaat’s team.

With matches against Celtic and Legia Warsaw on the horizon, it’s a hugely important period for the Gers.

Their form against both teams will be a much better indicator of where Rangers currently stand.

If they manage to best Legia and make the group stages of the Europa League for the second successive season, the ability of the current side would be undeniable.

If they beat the Hoops convincingly then there’ll be serious talk about credible title charge.

Ferguson may still have been a little hasty though.

It’s only after the team actually pick up trophies they can be compared to great Rangers sides of the past.
