Barry Ferguson comments on Steven Gerrard’s Rangers future

Rangers are without a win in four games under Steven Gerrard.

Rangers hero Barry Ferguson has told PLZ Soccer that he still thinks Steven Gerrard is the right manager for the club, even though questions will be asked about his future if the Gers lose to Celtic.

The Gers drew 1-1 at home with Kilmarnock on Saturday afternoon, making it four games without a win for Gerrard’s side.

There are a number of issues Gerrard needs to contend with here. Firstly, performances at home have been a struggle at times, with some feeling that the Ibrox pressure is too much for some players.

In terms of quality, Rangers lack a real creative player in the final third, and if Alfredo Morelos isn’t scoring, it’s sometimes hard to see where goals are coming from.

In his first season as a manager though, Gerrard has fared well with Rangers, guiding them into the Europa League group stages and beating Celtic at Ibrox in December.

After the international break, Rangers travel to Parkhead to take on Celtic, and if they lose to their Old Firm rivals, the title race will be well and truly over whilst making it five without a win.

Now, ex-Rangers captain Ferguson has been asked whether Gerrard will be at risk of losing his job if they lose to Celtic, but Ferguson thinks that pressure comes with being Rangers manager, and Gerrard is still the right man for the job.

Ferguson feels Rangers are better than last season, but suggested that the Gers must sign three or four ‘characters’ this summer to deal with the Ibrox demands.

“Yeah but that’s the nature of being the Rangers manager,” said Ferguson. “You’re going to be under pressure. It’s not been a great week for him, but I still stand by what I say; I do think he’s the right man for the job. If you look at Rangers now to where they were a year ago, I do honestly believe they’re a better team, but there needs to be quality added to that squad and he knows it.”

“If I’m watching Rangers, I’m enjoying watching Rangers more than I did with the previous manager. I know the results aren’t stacking up at times, I know in big games they’ve let themselves down, but that’s when you need big characters. He still needs to go and get three or four big characters for me. You play under pressure constantly at a club like Rangers, the fans demand; and you’ve got to handle their demands. If you can’t handle the demands, you can’t be there,” he added.
