The former Rangers captain thinks thoughts of winning a league title at Ibrox are ‘a bit greedy’.

Barry Ferguson thinks Rangers have already achieved their main target of qualifying for the UEFA Europa League group stage, The Scottish Sun report.

The Ibrox side kick-off their bid to reach the knockout stages of the competition this Thursday against Feyenoord, finding themselves in an incredibly tough group that also includes Porto and Young Boys.

Ferguson, who knows a thing or two about performing in Europe with the club, believes that Rangers are on the right track but have already achieved what Steven Gerrard set out to do at the start of the season.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he explained: “Rangers are on the right track now, there is no doubt they have the right man in charge.

“They are making good signings and have managed the European games well. It’s a different type of game, but Rangers are going in the right direction.

“They have qualified for the group stages, that was their main target. That’s two seasons in a row and it’s small steps.

“I know people get a bit greedy and want them to start winning leagues and so on.”

A pressure-free run?

Given the quality of opponents and the fact they were fourth seeds in the group, Rangers can approach this run of European games with the pressure somewhat off, comparative to life in the Scottish Premiership.

That could serve them well and see them pick up a few surprise results along the way.

Rangers fans will obviously want their club to do the best they possibly can, but the prospect of progression to the round of 32 appears to be slim.

As for expectations of a league title win, Ferguson is probably downplaying both Rangers’ chances and the realities of what Gerrard’s men are aiming for this season.

The Ibrox boss will likely want to push Celtic all the way for that kind of silverware come the end of the season.

Despite the derby defeat, they’ve shown a bit of consistency in the Scottish Premiership in terms of results. There’s a long way to go yet.
