Rangers suffered a huge 5-0 loss to Celtic on Sunday.

Rangers legend Barry Ferguson has applauded Jak Alnwick in his Daily Record column despite the Gers goalkeeper conceding five goals against Celtic on Sunday.

The Hoops secured their seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title – a second under Brendan Rodgers – with an excellent 5-0 win over Graeme Murty’s side.

Alnwick, 24, started in goal as Wes Foderingham remains sidelined through injury, and pulled off a number of impressive saves to keep the score to just five against Rodgers’ free-flowing Celtic.

Jak Alnwick of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 12, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ferguson singled out the former Port Vale goalkeeper for praise, but criticised the rest of the Rangers squad as they suffered a dismal loss to Celtic who are now on course to complete a second successive treble.

“Let’s be honest, there were five goals but it could have been far worse had it not been for the goalie Jak Alnwick,” Ferguson said. “He pulled off some decent saves and, incredibly after a 5-0 defeat, it’s the keeper who is emerging with a bit of credit.

“I don’t think it’s a lack of professionalism, it’s more a lack of knowledge of the game. It’s a collective failure rather than pinning blame on individuals.”

Blackpool manager Barry Ferguson looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Blackpool and Charlton Athletic at Bloomfield Road on May 03, 2014 in Blackpool, England.

Alnwick made just his eighth appearance for the Gers since joining the club in January 2017, but will have done his chances of remaining first choice ahead of Foderingham no harm.

He is likely to start against Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday with Foderingham unlikely to return to action before the end of the season, with Rangers looking to finish the season strongly and in second place.
