According to The Mirror, Aston Villa are interested in signing Barry Bannan from Sheffield Wednesday in the January transfer window.

It has been reported that Villa manager Dean Smith is planning a £8 million move for the 28-year-old midfielder, who started his professional club football career at the Villans.

Smith reportedly wants to make the Scotland international his first signing in the January transfer window, and he is exactly what the Villans need.

Bannan is a very good and creative midfielder who knows the Championship inside out, and although Villa have Jack Grealish, the 28-year-old has a lot more experience.

Grealish, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger, has been inconsistent so far this season, and has provided just one assist in 15 Championship starts for the Villans, according to WhoScored.

Bannan has provided 2.3 key passes per game on average in the Championship so far the season, according to WhoScored.

The former Crystal Palace midfielder would enhance the quality in the Wednesday midfield, would make Villa a better team and would make them more equipped to challenge for the Championship playoffs this season.
