Graeme Murty’s Glasgow Rangers were linked with bringing Steven Naismith to Ibrox.

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan has suggested to The Daily Record that Celtic or Rangers should have signed Steven Naismith in the January transfer window.

Former Rangers star Steven Naismith, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a forward, recently joined Scottish Premiership club Heart of Midlothian from Norwich City in the Championship in England in the January transfer window on loan until the end of the season.

According to Sky Sports, Rangers were interested in signing the 31-year-old Scotland international, who was on the books of the Gers from 2007 until 2012.

Bannan, who is now based in England with Wednesday in the Championship, has suggested that Celtic or Rangers should have signed his Scotland international teammate Naismith in the January transfer window.

“When it was mentioned that Naisy would be going to Scotland, the obvious suggestion would be Rangers or even Celtic,” Bannan told The Daily Record.

“I’m surprised he has gone to Hearts but that shows great ambition and it also looks great for Scottish football.”

Steven Naismith of Rangers celebrates at the end of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on September 18, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Naismith would have a good signing for Rangers, but it is hard to see Celtic ever making a move for the Scotland international.

Not only do the Hoops have enough good attack-mined players, but they also would not be willing to sign a player who has already played for Rangers.
