Middlesbrough and Birmingham City have been credited with interest in the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder.
Barry Bannan says he has “made clear” his desire to stay at Sheffield Wednesday far beyond the end of his existing contract, despite speculation linking him with moves to Middlesbrough and Birmingham City.
Bannan recently entered the final year of his deal at Hillsborough, where a cull is underway as the Owls attempt to remain Financial Fair Play compliant.
And the Scotland international’s situation has sparked some fears that he too could be sold in order to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
But Bannan, at least, claims to have no plans to leave amid reports of Middlesbrough and Birmingham interest.
“I know I’ve got a year left on my contract but there is plenty of time to sort it out,” he is quoted as saying by the Sheffield Star.
“I’ve made it clear I want to finish my career here if I can. I love it here.
“I’m just focused on doing what’s right for me and doing what’s right for the club. I want to play football and stay at this club.”
Bannan adds: “The club has been unbelievable for me. It was a big time in my career when I came here because I needed to play football, having been at clubs where I was in and out of the team.
“This club gave me a chance to build up my stature again and I have loved every minute of it.
“I would like to stay here but it’s not for me to decide that. It’s up to the club.”
Bannan, who continues to reside in the Birmingham area after beginning his career at Aston Villa, has made at least 26 more appearances in Sheffield Wednesday colours than he has for any other club throughout his career – 118.
And the 28-year-old was sorely missed after sitting out four months of last season through injury.
