After six years at Ibrox, Barrie McKay has left Rangers
Young winger Barrie McKay completed his move to Nottingham Forest today, after six years in the Rangers first team.
Many Rangers supporters had expected McKay to be a Rangers player for life, but current boss Pedro Caixinha had other ideas.
The 22-year-old sent a message to Rangers supporters last night, expressing his sadness at moving on, suggesting he was forced out.
McKay wrote: “Recently it was explained to me that I was perhaps surplus to requirements at the club. That’s football and sometimes you need to move on.”
He went onto describe his new club Nottingham Forest providing a ‘fantastic opportunity’, also reflecting on the great times he had at Ibrox.
Rangers’ Barrie McKay
McKay played a key role in helping Rangers win promotion under current Forest boss Mark Warburton, and scored a memorable goal against Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final in 2016.
The winger even referenced this in his message, he highlighted it as one of the many highs he experienced as a Rangers player.
Despite Pedro Caixinha’s plans being elsewhere, McKay leaves Rangers on good terms and clearly would be open to a return in the future if circumstances were different.
