Aston Villa have a lot to thank Barnsley for.

The Yorkshire side relinquished two of their best players to the Villans in January, with one of them – midfielder Conor Hourihane – finally getting off the mark for his new side in Tuesday’s win against Bristol City.

Barnsley appeared to have gotten over Hourihane’s departure, along with that of defender James Bree, having beaten Villa on their own turf only a few weeks later.

However, after Villa tweeted a video of Hourihane’s Bristol City goal, containing the lyrics of the song Barnsley fans used to sing to the Irishman, the Tykes decided to confront their Championship rivals – albeit in a manner which was seemingly tongue-in-cheek.

“Our song wasn’t part of the transfer deal, lads…” Barnsley’s official Twitter account posted in reply, to which one Villa fan thought he’d get involved.

“What we want we will take. As you are aware,” he posted.

Those at Barnsley are not short of wit, however, and responded as follows: “Except three points, as we are aware….”

He’ll perhaps think twice next time…

Barnsley do not appear to have been too badly affected by the departures of Bree and Hourihane, and sit eight points better off than Villa in 10th position.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side are in their first season back in the second tier, following a stint in League One, while Villa suffered their first relegation in 29 years last term.
