Celtic’s need for a new central defender is perhaps best evidenced by the amount of games Nir Bitton, a defensive midfielder, has had to play there this season – already into double figures.
Kolo Toure’s retirement has left only Dedryck Boyata, Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic as specialists in the role, and all three have experienced fitness issues a some stage this season.
A £5 million move for Reading’s Liam Moore was mooted by the Daily Record earlier this month, but the English side have since insisted that the player will not be sold.
There are, however, plenty more where Moore comes from in England’s second tier, and one particularly impressive performer – to whom Celtic should be familiar from his time in Scottish football – could be on the move in January.
According to the Daily Record, Barnsley’s Liam Lindsay – who was named in the Scottish Premiership’s team of the year last season – is being eyed by several unnamed Premier League ‘giants’.
Barnsley only paid £350,000 for Lindsay earlier this year and though his price tag is sure to have risen considerably since then, he could still be within Celtic’s price range.
What’s more, Lindsay would almost certainly be attracted by the idea of a move to Parkhead, given the following revelation.
“I come from a family of what I’d call ‘soft’ Celtic fans so watched them a few times when I was younger,” the Glaswegian told the Daily Record.
“Bobo Balde was always my favourite, but only because he was so massive and everyone was scared of him.”
