If Jason Cummings chooses Barnsley over QPR, rumours surrounding one of the Championship’s top strikers will only increase.

Queens Park Rangers and Barnsley are ready to go head-to-head for the signature of Hibernian star Jason Cummings in January, the Daily Record reports.

The 21-year-old striker has scored regularly in the Scottish second division since making his breakthrough at Easter Road in the 2014/15 season, netting 48 goals in 84 league appearances.

And the Scotland youth international has maintained his remarkable goal-scoring ratio this season under Neil Lennon, helping Hibs to the top of the Championship table.

However, how much longer he remains at the forefront of Hibernian’s promotion challenge remains to be seen with the Daily Record reporting that Championship sides QPR and Barnsley are monitoring the situation of a striker who is under contract until 2020.

Therefore, there is little chance Hibernian will let him go for cheap, having rejected a £1.7 million offer from League One challengers Peterborough United in the summer.

It is no surprise to see Ian Holloway’s QPR at the front of the queue, Idrissa Sylla top scoring with just six while Sebastian Polter and Tjaronn Chery, the second highest goalscorers in the squad, are both reportedly set for the exit this month.

However, it is the apparent interest from Barnsley that is likely to raise the most intrigue, especially after The Mirror reported that 11-goal top-scorer Sam Winnall had been identified by Brentford as the ideal replacement for Scott Hogan (below), the £12 million-rated centre-forward allegedly on the verge of signing for West Ham United.

Therefore, you cannot accuse Barnsley of failing to plan ahead.
