Winnall left Barnsley to sign for Sheffield Wednesday in January.
Barnsley’s Adam Hammill
Barnsley winger Adam Hammill has taken a dig at former teammate Sam Winnall, whose Sheffield Wednesday side visit Oakwell on Saturday.
Winnall (11) remains Barnsley’s top scorer this season, more than two months after he was controversially bought by Wednesday in a deal worth an initial £500,000.
However, when asked in an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield on Thursday about the prospect of facing the 26-year-old striker, Hammill replied: “Sam who?
“He done absolutely tremendous here,” the Liverpudlian added. “He was a great lad, a great player but unfortunately he’s got the wrong colours on on Saturday.
“Obviously we’ve missed him. I do understand, well not understand, but I can see why he’s moved on. But as I said in the past, I made that mistake before and the grass isn’t always greener.”
Winnall will perhaps know where Hammill is coming from, having found the net once in 11 appearances since his move 12 miles down the road to Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday’s Sam Winnall
Wednesday have, however, been without a number of key players in recent weeks, resulting in a loss of form which could have seen them fall out of the play-off places.
Despite this, the Owls remain a point ahead of seventh-placed Fulham with eight games left to secure a top-six berth, and promotion remains in the sights of Winnall and co – in what is the Wulfrunian’s first ever season at Championship level.
