After clinching promotion to the Championship, Barnsley have had an excellent start to the new season under Paul Heckingbottom.

Finishing the season in 6th, Barnsley found themselves in the play-offs, coming up against Jon Whitney’s Walsall.

Thanks to goals from Fletcher, Hammil and Isgrove, Barnsley stormed to a 3-1 win, sealing promotion to the Championship.

The play-off final success, added to their 3-2 victory in the Johnstone Paint Trophy Final, rounded off an excellent 15/16 season for The Tykes.

After working hard over the summer to strengthen the squad, Heckingbottom made a number of good signings, including Walsall striker Tom Bradshaw for £550,000.

After a first day defeat in their 16/17 Championship campaign to Ipswich Town, Barnsley picked up three wins in August, against Derby County (2-0), Queens Park Rangers (3-2) and Rotherham United (4-0), the latter thanks to goals from Roberts, Hammil, Bradshaw and Kent.

Despite a number of defeats, Barnsley were playing with a grit and determination, always making the bigger teams in the Championship work hard if they wanted to take points away from The Tykes.
Moving into 2017, Barnsley will be hoping to continue their run of good form and keep hold of their impressive manager, Heckingbottom, as they look to seal their place in the Championship for next season.
