Barnsley fans are tweeting Joe Williams in numbers after the Everton talent’s Oakwell loan spell ended prematurely on Monday.

Midfielder Williams played 34 times for the Tykes before injury struck, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign.

The Everton academy product impressed in that time, so much so his former boss Paul Heckingbottom has been linked with a summer reunion at new club Leeds United (the Sun).

Barnsley fans, though, are desperate to see him back at Oakwell next season – if he hasn’t broke into Everton’s plans by then.

Here’s what they’re saying…

Williams still has two years left on his Everton contract, but may have to wait for a first team breakthrough with Idrissa Gueye, Morgan Schneiderlin, James McCarthy, Tom Davies and Beni Baningime among those ahead of him in the Goodison Park pecking order.

Another loan spell is perhaps the most likely scenario next season, although whether the 21-year-old returns Barnsley – who remain in the Championship’s relegation places – or signs for a different club (the one up the road, for example) we shall have to wait and see.
