HITC Sport understands that Tykes would like midfielder back at the club.
Barnsley are looking to re-sign midfielder Josh Brownhill, HITC Sport understands.
The 21-year-old spent last season on-loan at Oakwell from Preston North End, but he turned down the chance to stay at Deepdale.
A number of clubs made approaches to Brownhill, with Bristol City convincing him to make the move to Ashton Gate.
Brownhill’s chances have been limited but in recent weeks he has battled his way into Lee Johnson’s first-team.
Josh Brownhill playing for Barnsley
Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbotham has lost his main striker Sam Winnall to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday and he is battling to hang onto the likes of right-back James Bree, central defender Marc Roberts and his midfield lynch-pin Conor Hourihane.
But with money from Winnall in his coffers, HITC Sport understands that Heckingbottom has asked his bosses to try and see if they can lure Brownhill back to South Yorkshire.
It remains to be seen if Bristol City would be willing to do business on the former Manchester United trainee.
