Barnsley defeated Brentford 2-0 over the weekend, thanks to Angus MacDonald’s performance at the back.

Barnsley centre-half Angus MacDonald has praised his team’s outstanding all-round display on the club’s official website, as they dispatched 11th-placed Brentford 2-0 away from home to go level with the Bees on 19 points, only separated by goal difference.

MacDonald was reintroduced to the side at the weekend following his team’s 2-0 home defeat to table-toppers Newcastle United on Tuesday night. However, he put in a commanding display at Griffin Park as the Reds ran out convincing winners.

But MacDonald insisted to the club’s website that it was much more than his individual performance that earned the victory on Saturday.

He told the Barnsley website: “They came at us late on, 2-0 down you’d expect them to. They’re going to throw everything at you.

“Then they bring on the big man up front and we’re getting a bit tired and that’s when you’ve got to keep your concentration. It wasn’t just the back four. The whole team dug in.”

The 2-0 win ended a six-game winless run for the Reds and lifted them up to 12th in the Championship table. Not only that, but the match emphasised MacDonald’s importance to Barnsley.

Their third clean sheet this season with him in the side, the 24-year-old also formed an immediate partnership with Adam Jackson, with whom he was playing for the first time. With Marc Roberts injured before the game, a partnership with Jackson could be key to future successes.
