The Dundalk defender is being monitored by both Barnsley and Oldham Athletic after a string of fine performances.

HITC Sport understands from sources close to the situation that Barnsley and Oldham Athletic are scouting Dundalk defender Andy Boyle with a view to making a move in the upcoming transfer window.

The 25-year-old is playing a major role in the Irish side’s superb Europa League run and those performances are allowing his suitors to assess his ability against some of Europe’s top talent.

Boyle played against both AZ Alkmaar and Maccabi Tel-Aviv, helping his side to four points in the process, and at this rate he could be testing himself against an even higher level of opponent in due course.

Rotherham United, Chesterfield and Sheffield United are also believed to be interested in the centre-back, but Barnsley and Oldham are currently leading the chase.

Boyle is a free agent in January and a move to an English club seems a near certainty at this stage, with the goal-scoring centre-back someone who could excel at a higher level if given the chance.

Barnsley are currently 10th in the Championship, pushing hard for a play-off place, while Oldham are in the bottom four in League One with little separating them from mid-table at this early stage of the campaign.
