Newcastle United could move to bring Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley to Tyneside this summer – even if Arsenal’s Joe Willock returns.
That’s according to The Athletic, who report that the Magpies have a host of box-to-box players on their radar, including Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.
Blues team-mate Barkley is on the radar and not just in case Newcastle can’t strike a deal to re-sign loanee Willock.
Steve Bruce seemingly wants to sign both players even if that seems a little unlikely for the Magpies given the lack of funds under Mike Ashley.
Barkey, 27, spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, and whilst he started well, his season faded away and he was nowhere near England’s Euro 2020 squad.
The midfielder surely doesn’t have a future at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel, and Newcastle will now hope to offer him an escape route.

Everton and West Ham are keen on signing Barkley this summer according to 90Min, meaning Newcastle will face a real battle to get him signed up.
Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has branded Barkley ‘unreal’ having trained with him for England, and seeing them join forces at St James’ Park could be hugely exciting for Magpies fans if Bruce can pull it off.
