The Belgian defender would be a useful addition to the West Bromwich Albion squad.
Baggies boss Tony Pulis is still looking for defensive reinforcements to help bolster his options before the transfer window slams shut at the end of this month.
If reports are to be believed, West Brom have two main defensive targets – Kevin Wimmer, according to Sky Sports, and Thomas Vermaelen, also according to Sky Sports.
The Spurs ace will be the far more expensive option out of the two players, and knowing Pulis’ frugal approach to transfers, it would come as no surprise whatsoever to se him opt for the cheaper, more experienced Barcelona star.
And that would not necessarily be a bad thing.
The 31-year-old former Arsenal man has endured problems with injuries over the past few years, so that in itself would add a certain level of risk to any kind of deal for him, but his undoubted quality means he would be worth it.
Vermaelen possesses an incredible leap, which in turn make him extremely strong in the air, and that combined with the manner in which he anticipates danger makes him a fantastic all-round defender.
The Belgium international has proved himself on a regular basis in the Premier League, during his time with the Gunners, whilst the same can hardly be said for Wimmer.
And with not long left until the transfer window slams shut, Pulis should intensify his interest in Vermaelen, and bring him to the Hawthorns as a cheaper alternative to the Tottenham defender.
