Barcelona are expected to make another push to sign Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo this summer.

Fabrizio Romano recently claimed on Twitter that the Spanish giants plan to use the money that they could make from selling Ousmane Dembele to Paris Saint-Germain to fund a move for Joao Cancelo.

Barcelona’s interest in the full-back is not new. Back in May, their manager Xavi told TV3 that the club wanted to sign him during the January transfer window but Manchester City were reluctant to send their player to the Spotify Camp Nou.

Instead, Cancelo went on to join Bayern Munich on loan before returning to the Etihad.

If the Portugal international does end up joining Barcelona, he will link-up with former City team-mate Ilkay Gundogan, who left the European champions for the La Liga outfit in June.

Pep Guardiola should keep hold of Joao Cancelo

City obviously proved that they could cope without Cancelo last season, going on to win the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup after his move to Bayern.

Nevertheless, they should not be too quick to get rid of him. The former Juventus man still has plenty to offer to Pep Guardiola.

Cancelo can obviously play at left-back and right-back, while the 29-year-old had no issues operating as an inverted full-back when his manager started using him in that role.

All in all, it makes a lot of sense for City to keep hold of Cancelo, especially if Kyle Walker leaves the Etihad before the transfer window closes.

Whether the ex-Inter Milan player wants to remain at the Premier League champions is not clear. But if he does, Guardiola should be looking to retain his services.

Having guided his side to the treble last term, though, you suspect City supporters will back whatever decision the former Barcelona manager makes.
