Bam Adebayo confronted Brian Windhorst after the analyst suggested Jayson Tatum should receive his minutes at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The incident occurred while Team USA was competing in France. It followed public commentary regarding potential lineup adjustments.
The conversation focused on how Tatum could be integrated into the rotation. Windhorst had indicated that additional minutes for Tatum would likely come at another player’s expense.

Windhorst reveals Adebayo confronted him in Paris
Brian Windhorst explained on the Hoop Collective podcast that he floated Bam Adebayo’s name as a possible candidate to see reduced playing time in place of Jayson Tatum.
Windhorst was one of the many analysts who felt that Tatum, having come off an NBA championship win, deserved minutes. The following day, Adebayo addressed the comment face-to-face.
“Tatum is obviously not playing. I was explaining on TV, ‘I don’t see how Tatum is going to play unless somebody else doesn’t play.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe Bam Adebayo [shouldn’t play].’”
“So I said that on American TV. And the next day, we were in Lille, France, and Bam was like, ‘Really? I’m not gonna play? I defend 1 through 5, bro.’”
Windhorst conceded that Adebayo had a valid argument regarding his value. Tatum did not gain additional minutes, while Adebayo continued in his role.
Team USA balanced roles during title run
The situation unfolded as the United States evaluated combinations of scoring and defensive coverage. Adebayo, a five-time All-Defensive Team selection, offered versatility across multiple positions.
Jayson Tatum barely featured for Team USA, despite playing a pivotal part in the Boston Celtics winning the NBA championship just months before.
However, Tatum wasn’t the only player to not get many looks in. Tyrese Haliburton didn’t feature much for Team USA at Paris either.
Team USA ultimately secured the gold medal with a 98-87 victory over France in the final. The episode highlighted how closely players monitor media commentary during major tournaments.
