Rangers kicked off their season with a narrow and yet comfortable win today.

Steven Gerrard’s side were given a tricky opening-day trip to Aberdeen for the return of the Scottish Premiership.

With Celtic aiming for 10-in-a-row this season, there’s huge pressure on Rangers, but they got their campaign off to a winning start with a solid if unspectacular 1-0 win over the Dons.

It was Ryan Kent’s first-half goal which proved the difference, as the winger latched on to a clever ball from Alfredo Morelos, who started up front despite the speculation about his future.

The light Blues had chances to kill off the game during the second half – particularly after Andrew Considine’s red card resulted in the hosts being reduced to 10 men – but it was just the solitary goal that saw Gerrard’s side over the line in the end.

One of the reasons for the clean sheet was new boy Leon Balogun and Connor Goldson looking impenetratable at the heart of Rangers’ defence.

And Balogun, who joined on a Bosman last month, says that Goldson warned that he’d be talking to him throughout the debut.

He told the club’s official YouTube channel about his £3m team-mate: “He’s a great talker on the pitch. He told me before the match, ‘If I’m too much in your ear, it’s just to help you’. I welcome that because I will need some time to get used to the mechanisms.”
