Brighton and Hove Albion have today kickstarted their summer transfer business by securing a deal for Mainz defender Leon Balogun.

The Seagulls are preparing for a second season in the Premier League having defied the odds to stay up, and manager Chris Hughton has started his transfer activity.

Today, Brighton have snapped up Mainz defender Leon Balogun, handing him a two-year contract with his contract with the Bundesliga side expiring.

Balogun, 29, is set to feature for Nigeria at the World Cup in Russia this summer, and he now arrives to boost Brighton’s defensive options behind Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy.

Balogun’s arrival may just hint that Brighton are preparing for a defensive exit – and all signs may point to Connor Goldson leaving the Amex Stadium.

Goldson, 25, is a wanted man, with Rangers keen to lure him to Ibrox this summer; the Daily Mail report that a £1.5million fee has been snubbed, with new manager Steven Gerrard pushing to complete a £2million move.

The 6ft 3in centre back would be a major boost to Rangers’ defensive options, and having seemingly been pushed down the pecking order by Balogun’s arrival, Goldson could well be on his way to Glasgow in the near future.
