Arsenal linked midfielder Corentin Tolisso will be tempted to cut his Bayern Munich career short this summer after falling down the pecking order at the Allianz Arena, Lothar Matthaus has told Sky Deutschland.

When the Bavarian giants invested a club-record to bring Tolisso to the Bundesliga in the summer of 2017, the expectation was that the former Lyon star would grow into a generation-defining performer at the Allianz Arena.

But thanks to a cruel series of injuries, plus the rapid rise of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka, the World Cup winning midfielder is quickly becoming the odd-one out in Munich.

Tolisso had started just seven league games this season before another lengthy spell on the sidelines. He was also restricted to a grand total of one Bundesliga start in 2018/19.

Although the red flags are waving and the alarm bells ringing, Arsenal still appear to be interested in signing a player they have been linked with since the Arsene Wenger days.

Fussball Transfers reports that Tolisso is keen on a move to the Premier League this summer with the Gunners battling Manchester United for his signature.

And Matthaus feels that, with Bayern looking to finance a deal for Leroy Sane, Tolisso may be packing his bags sooner rather than later.

“Bayern must and will strengthen with top players,” says the 1990 Ballon D’Or winner, who also thinks Leverkusen talisman Kai Havertz could end up at the Allianz Arena.

“I assume that Tolisso may have the desire to change clubs to get more games, because he is currently unable to get around Kimmich, Goretzka, Thiago and (Thomas) Muller.”

Transfer funds are in short supply at Arsenal, with the Gunners expected to lose £150 million over the next 12 months due to the global health crisis.

And, with reinforcements needed in defence and attack, it remains to be seen how high Tolisso is on Mikel Arteta’s list of priorities.
