Matthew Upson was critical of Arsenal defender, Ben White, for ‘ball-watching’ during England’s 2-1 win over Switzerland, as he told BBC Sport.
Arsenal’s thriving centre-back was brought in from the cold at Wembley, after Manchester City’s, John Stones, had to pull out through injury.
Stones was selected to start in back three during the friendly encounter, but a problem in the warm-up meant that White had to be drafted in.
It was an eventual day for the Arsenal 24-year-old because he went from being on the bench, to starting, playing in a back three then moving out to right-back later on in the game.
Nonetheless, for Switzerland’s opener, which came after a cross from Xherdan Shaqiri, ex-Arsenal man, Upson, was critical of White for misjudging the flight of the ball and allowing Embolo to head home from behind him.
“One moment in this first half; a real piece of quality,” said Upson.
“A great cross comes in (from Shaqiri) and Embolo peels off in the box. Ben White is ball-watching. It is a good finish.”
Just like the whole England team, White was lacklustre and slow to start during the first period.
But, in the second half, when things started to pick him, White was gaining more confidence and speed to his play.
When Gareth Southgate switched from a back three to a flat back four, he played White out as a right-back.
And, like he has done when played in midfield, the versatile player showcased his worth and was motoring up and down that flank in fine fashion.
Perhaps something for Mikel Arteta to look at, if he ever needs someone to fill in out on that right flank.
