The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder had previously been touted as a future Spanish international.
Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has taken to Twitter to rule out the prospect of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks representing Spain at international level.
A recent report from the Mirror claimed the European giants were looking into the possibility of Winks being illegible for them via his grandparents’ heritage.
However, Balague has now written the following on social media, seemingly ruling out what would have always been an unlikely twist:
“On Harry Winks: His great grandparents (not his grandparents) are Spanish which doesn’t qualify him to play for Spain. The Spanish FA know it.”
So there you have it, less than 24 hours after one of the strangest stories of the season, it has been shot down.
That will be good news for an England team knowing that Winks has all the attributes to be a future superstar for the Three Lions.
The midfielder has been brilliant for Tottenham this season, making the most of his breakthrough campaign and looking every inch a Spurs great in the making.
He still has a long way to go, but when the call does come for senior international recognition, it seems it will be a lot closer to home.
For now he will be fully focused on Tottenham as they bid for FA Cup success and a top-two finish in the league come May.
