The Newcastle United player looks to be heading to Spain.

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has taken to Twitter to give an update on Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote’s proposed move to Sporting Gijon.

The Ivory Coast international has featured just twice for the Magpies this season – once in the league and once in the FA Cup – and as reported by the Chronicle earlier in the week he looks set to complete a free transfer to La Liga.

It has been three days since that initial report, and Balague has given an update, writing: “Tiote (Newcastle) could soon (be) moving to Sporting Gijon if nothing goes wrong. Last details to be ironed out…”

Given his lack of impact in recent times, there are likely to be few Newcastle fans shedding a tear if, as expected, he leaves St. James’ Park this month.

At his best he was a key player for Newcastle but those performances have been few and far between and the 30-year-old needs to move on for the good of his career.

Considering the price tag previously attached to the player, Gijon could be bagging a bargain, and there is little risk attached to a free transfer if a deal can be pushed over the line.
