Leeds United hit the Self Destruct button last term.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell has admitted that Leeds United’s failure to reach the Premier League made him stop watching football and that his team-mates didn’t deserve to go up.
Leeds finished third in the Championship with their highest points tally in nine years – 83 – but Marcelo Bielsa’s side were knocked out of the playoffs by Derby County at the semi-final stage.
But this doesn’t quite tell the full story of the Whites’ woes.
United could and most definitely should have won automatic promotion, but a disastrous Easter period, including back-to-back defeats by 10-man Wigan Athletic and Brentford, saw Sheffield United move ahead of them in the table and that was enough.
Bielsa’s troops spent most of the season alternating between first and second place until the final few weeks, and Peacock-Farrell, displaced as Leeds’ number one goalkeeper in January by Kiko Casilla, told Belfast Live that although it was a ‘real shame’ how things panned out, United didn’t deserve to go up.
“It was a real shame how it ended. You don’t get out the league unless you deserve it and at the end of the day the performances in the last 15 games, we didn’t deserve promotion.
“It hits home hard and I couldn’t watch football after that finished. I didn’t want to watch anything.”
Most Leeds fans will agree with the 22-year-old honesty. They didn’t deserve promotion.
It doesn’t matter how you start – it’s how you finish what matters and, unfortunately for the Elland Road faithful, the team self destructed at the worst possible period in the season.
