Neco Williams to Aston Villa feels like one of those transfer rumours that makes very little sense no matter what side of the fence you are sitting on (Goal).

If there is one position where reinforcements are not required at Villa Park, it’s at right-back.

Despite the recent departure of Ahmed Elmohamady, Dean Smith can still call on the returning Ashley Young, the versatile Ezri Konsa and the highly-rated Kaine Kesler, not to mention fan favourite Frederic Guilbert, who is on his way back to Birmingham following an excellent loan spell at Strasbourg.

If it’s first-team football Williams wants – the Liverpool Echo believes the Welsh international is keen to join a club where he would play more regularly – Aston Villa is hardly the most obvious destination.

Matty Cash is the club’s undisputed, first-choice right-back and should only get better after a superb start to life in the Premier League.

Williams is capable of playing on the left too of course but, there, he’d run into a Matt Targett-shaped obstacle.

Goal reports that the £10 million-rated Williams is also on the radar of Wolves, Leeds United and Burnley.

All three would make more sense than an Aston Villa side who, at our count, have five potential right-back options at their disposal already.

They really don’t need a sixth.
