Southampton and Huddersfield secured Premier League survival this week and all concerned were understandably delighted.

Southampton looked dead and buried a few weeks ago while Huddersfield had a daunting run-in on their hands.

But a draw at Everton followed by a 1-0 win over Swansea saw Southampton all but secure safety on Tuesday night barring a miraculous 10 goal swing by Swansea on the final day.

It was Huddersfield’s turn 24 hours later, a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge enough to ensure they could not be caught.

The euphoria in the stands was matched on the pitch as Saints manager Mark Hughes led exuberant celebrations at the Liberty while the Terriers were seen throwing boss David Wagner in the air, and crawling around the pitch.

Those celebrations received a mixed response from football fans and pundits, though, with many feeling they were over the top.

And none more so than former West Ham, Crystal Palace and Cardiff defender Danny Gabbidon who took to Twitter to vent.

“I don’t remember joyously throwing Tony Pulis aloft after he kept Crystal Palace in the Premier League… are these celebrations a bit excessive or am I getting this wrong??,” Gabbidon said on Twitter.

The former Wales international received mixed responses to his post.

Many fans pointed out that Huddersfield deserved credit and were right to celebrate survival as an achievement given the fact they came up via the playoffs and it was their debut season in the Premier League.

But just as many agreed when it came to the Saints, feeling they went over the top for a club that should not have been down in the first place.
