Jordan Rhodes may have struggled at Sheffield Wednesday but he could still be Sunderland’s saving grace.

No bid has been tabled by the Black Cats as yet for a striker who became Wednesday’s club record transfer this summer when he joined permanently from Middlesbrough for £10m (BBC).

This followed a loan spell at Hillsborough from Boro, but Rhodes has struggled for form for the Owls and to date has scored five goals in 25 appearances.
However, despite a recent blip the 27-year-old is a proven performer at Championship level, with 94 goals in the competition in 211 games to date for the likes of Blackburn Rovers and Huddersfield Town.
Simon Grayson managed Rhodes at the latter and therefore knows what the forward is capable of when given regular game time and when made the focus of the attack.

This is what the Scotland international has lacked under Carlos Carvalhal, with the Portuguese regularly changing his forward line and failing to place much confidence in the attacker.
However, at the Stadium of Light he could be the perfect partner for either Lewis Grabban or James Vaughan in a 4-4-2 system and Grayson knows all too well that given the opportunity, Rhodes has the potential to fire a club towards promotion.
