Leeds United fans had plenty to say after Emile Smith Rowe scored for Arsenal against Manchester United last night.

What’s the story?

The deadlock at Old Trafford was broken in rather strange circumstances last night, as Smith Rowe blasted home a volley from outside the area while United goalkeeper David de Gea was down injured.

Referee Martin Atkinson tried to disallow the strike, but he hadn’t blown his whistle in time and was instructed to give Arsenal the goal.

It immediately brought back memories of Leeds’ game against Aston Villa at Elland Road.

On that occasion Leeds had scored while a Villa player laid prone on the floor, and they didn’t give the ball back.

Villa were incensed and, as a result, Marcelo Bielsa ordered Leeds to let the claret and blues score.

There was no such charity from Arsenal last night though.

As soon as the goal was given, Smith Rowe raced away in celebration – and they were scenes Leeds fans felt that Bielsa would definitely disagree with.

Were Arsenal in the wrong?

It has to be said to Bielsa’s sportsmanship was admirable when he allowed Villa to score.

But it is hard to chastise Arsenal for foul play last night.

De Gea had been trodden on by his own man and was fit to continue after receiving treatment, which showed the injury was not a particularly severe one.

In the end United still managed to fight their way back to adversity and claim the three points, as they beat Arsenal 3-2.
