Atletico Madrid are now reportedly favourites to beat Tottenham to Schalke midfielder Max Meyer, who is a free agent this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur may have just received a blow in their pursuit of Schalke’s Max Mayer, with the Daily Mail claiming Atletico Madrid are now the favourites to sign the midfielder.

German publication Bild outlined that Spurs, along with rivals Arsenal and Barcelona were the teams showing the most interest in Meyer – who is available to sign as a free agent this summer.

Schalke's midfielder Max Meyer looks on during the German first division Bundesliga football match Schalke 04 vs Hertha Berlin in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany, on March 3, 2018.

However, they also reported that Atleti had sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action in the Bundesliga during a 1-0 victory against Hertha Berlin.

Now it seems that the Spaniards are the most keen to land Meyer, especially as their squad has been reduced to just 19 players following a recent exodus to China.

Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang signed both Yannick Carrasco and Nicolas Gaitan, while Beijing Renhe snapped up Augusto Fernandez in the past few weeks.

This has left Atletico short of numbers and Meyer would also help head coach Diego Simeone in his ambition of adding some younger talent into his aging squad.
