Tim Sherwood has said that Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho should never have picked Serge Aurier last night, as per his comments to Premier League productions.

Aurier was selected to start at right-back for Spurs, but did not cover himself in glory on or off the pitch.

The £23 million Ivorian (BBC Sport) was caught out for Liverpool’s first goal in Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat, after he failed to track Sadio Mane’s run.

And Sherwood felt that Mourinho made a mistake by putting Aurier into his team in the first place.

“They couldn’t handle him [Mane],” Sherwood said. “He caused Serge Aurier all sorts of problems, drifting in. He couldn’t handle his power, pace or intelligence of his runs. He was a mistake waiting to happen.

“I said it from the start that I thought it was a risk playing so many inexperienced players and non-reliable players like Aurier in that backline against a team like Liverpool. I thought it was a bad, bad decision by Jose Mourinho.”

Aurier was actually hooked off at half-time by Mourinho, and that decision did not appear to go down well with the player.

The Telegraph report that Aurier stormed off at half-time, and the repercussions of those actions are still to be seen.

Aurier has actually generally been solid under Mourinho, but he has shown a tendency to make mistakes in high profile games, and there is still a feeling around Spurs that he cannot be entirely trusted defensively.

The problem for Tottenham is that Matt Doherty has hardly looked convincing since his summer move from Wolves, either.

It will now be interesting to see who Mourinho backs to start at right-back, when Spurs take on Brighton on Sunday evening.
