Roy Keane praised the ‘fantastic’ display from Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold during England’s 10-0 win over San Marino in their World Cup qualifier on Monday night, as he told ITV Sport.

England needed just one more point to book their place for Qatar 2022 and they did it in an emphatic fashion – albeit against the worst team in the world.

Gareth Southgate’s side can’t help but deal with what is put in front of them and they didn’t let complacency settle in as they were ruthless on the night.

Liverpool’s creative machine from the night bagged himself three assists on his return to the XI.

And Keane praised Alexander-Arnold for doing his job very well, even if it was against San Marino.

“Not a bad night for him considering he has got what, three or four assists tonight?” said Keane.

“Sometimes players do try too hard. We have seen that with one of the two younger players.

“But he got back to what he’s good at. Putting it in the right areas. Delivery. Fantastic – he talks about Beckham. He used to put it into areas. It’s not about picking people out, just put it into the right area and people will attack it.”

There is some serious competition for that right-back squad at England and a case of picking your best from three outstanding players.

Kyle Walker has been the proven performer for a lot longer, but he hasn’t been at the level of TAA or Reece James have been producing this season.

Then it’s a case of picking your best because, whichever one plays from the Liverpool and Chelsea duo, then you know you are getting top-quality performances.

Either way, there is no let-off in that spot because with one slip-up then you are out of the XI and possibly replaced by another world-class star.
