Duncan Ferguson was unable to bring Everton back to winning ways as the Toffees fell to a 1-0 defeat to Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side.

Emi Buendia’s flicked header just before the break was all that separated the two sides as a managerless Everton continued their barren run of form against a rejuvenated Villa.

The quest for a replacement for Rafa Benitez is approaching its second week with a successor yet to be named. For now, Ferguson will take control of Everton, and it was a game to forget against Villa.

The same problems that plagued the Toffees under their former Spanish manager still persisted. Yet one player who impressed for Everton against Villa was Abdoulaye Doucoure.

The midfielder, who joined the club in 2020 for a reported fee of £20m according to BBC Sport, had one of his best games in some time as Doucoure paired well with his Portuguese counterpart Andre Gomes.

Despite going off with an injury just past the hour mark, Doucoure’s performance was one that impressed Everton fans, with many supporters on social media hailing the Frenchman as the best player on the pitch against Villa.

Indeed, Doucoure has overall been one of Everton’s most important players this campaign, and despite his injury, supporters were amazed how the Frenchman performed against Gerrard’s side, who are in a good vein of form.

Whilst it is unknown how long Doucoure will be absent for, fans on social media will be hoping the Frenchman returns after the Premier League break, with the midfielder showing his best qualities against Villa on Saturday.

Here’s what some Everton fans had to say about Doucoure’s display yesterday at Goodison Park on Twitter…
